Baufritz
Baufritz manufacture timber frame eco homes, free harmful chemicals, in their state-of-the-art German factory, to a fixed price and schedule. Once delivered to site, Baufritz homes can be erected in a matter of days
Baufritz is a specialist in timber frame eco homes. We believe that clients should not be restricted in the design of their home and that it is important to realise their vision. That is why our motto is that no two Baufritz homes are the same.
Baufritz has established itself as one of the leading ecological timber frame house manufacturers in Europe. We have over one hundred years' experience in the German market and have been operating in the UK for over 15 years.
Our homes are built using natural, local materials sourced from sustainable forests close to our factory. These materials have been used for thousands of years to build alpine homes and have proven to be strong and durable.
We have developed a process using modern manufacturing methods to produce highly engineered prefabricated modules in our state-of-the-art factory. These modules can then be transported to the customer's site and erected in a matter of days. Typically, our homes can go from concept and design to completion in less than 12 months — a significant improvement on traditional construction methods.
We also believe your home should be free from the harmful chemicals that have become the norm in standard building practices.
Tackling climate change has put a spotlight on the energy consumption of buildings, and new buildings need to deliver significant improvements in energy efficiency. Traditional house design and construction methods struggle to meet these standards. All Baufritz homes have excellent energy efficiency ratings.
Minimising your resource footprint
Baufritz homes are designed and built to be highly energy efficient. For instance, we have developed HOIZ insulation. Manufactured from natural wood waste products, HOIZ is placed between the inside and outside layers of our timber framed houses to create the highest level of insulation. The windows and doors also use isolated glazing to minimise heat loss.
Conversely, overheating is one of the biggest challenges low-energy homes face, and our architects use some very clever ventilation systems and shading methods to manage internal conditions.
Embedded carbon in building materials such as concrete, as well as a historic tendency to send materials to landfill, results in a high carbon footprint and natural resource exploitation. To address this issue, our primary manufacturing material is wood, sourced from sustainable certified forests where felled trees are replanted.
In fact, we believe all building materials should be as natural as possible. A house constructed using only natural materials, creates a healthy living environment for its residents.
As all our houses are manufactured in a state-of-the-art factory in Bavaria, waste is kept to an absolute minimum. At the end of their useful life, our houses can also be recycled.
By designing and building houses to ultra-low energy standards, and by using only natural sustainably sourced materials, we are able to deliver carbon neutral houses without compromising on a client’s design ideals.
A new Bauhaus-style home in the countryside
The Neumann family are art collectors and dog lovers living in the countryside yet close to the city. Having spent many years living in cities across Europe and Asia, it was important for them to have a space that felt like their ideal home.
They chose to build their own home because they wanted to create their own unique design. They desired a space for their art collection and a library room, a design away from the norm, with a clear connection to the surrounding nature — a house that could not simply be bought, it had to be built.
The clear, cubic structure of this Bauhaus-style house by Baufritz, with some 200m2 of living space, blends into the coastal woodland landscape.
Huge rhododendrons and wild grasses sway in the breeze, the birch trees that have always stood here rustle and lush hydrangeas bloom. The flat roof has been planted, and the wooden façade has been deliberately left in its natural state, to blend in.
Accustomed to working with professionals and giving people freedom and trust, the clients also gave the Baufritz design team free creative control to realise their ideas. The brief was to deliver their vision of home in a high-quality, sustainable and natural package.
A sophisticated lighting concept using flicker-free LEDs showcases the family's extensive art collection, collected during their travels, in the best possible light.
The library was created by our master carpenters to fit perfectly into the space, and there is a private yoga and fitness room, too.
A contemporary woodland home
House Long is set in a clearing at the heart of a grade-II listed arboretum in Hampshire.
Its contemporary architecture comprises three distinct volumes stacked one upon the other. The floor plan has been inverted with the guest rooms below and the living spaces above to make the most of the natural daylight filtering through the lush green canopy.
The challenge for Baufritz was to adapt the bold design by architects McLean Quinlan to our modular building system. The house was manufactured off-site with walls and windows fitted.
Like all Baufritz houses, our HOIZ insulation minimises its energy footprint. Natural materials were chosen that contrast and interact with the foliage.
Inside the house, a muted colour scheme creates a haven of tranquillity. A finely crafted oak staircase with running timber slats connects the different floors. Extensive glazing and rooflights above the staircase allow light to stream into the living space through the lattice of leaves.
Elegant grey floor tiles in the living area and on the terrace merge the interior living area with the outdoor patio, fostering a sense of continuity.
A Surrey self build with oriental flair
Baufritz has created an idyllic country home with an eastern influence. With sweeping views of the Surrey Hills, this contemporary home is inspired by Japanese architecture that combines clean aesthetics with tranquil spaces for contemplation.
The house is designed with a upside-down layout with the bedrooms on the lower level and the open-plan kitchen and living space above. The master bedroom is in a separate wing, connected by a flat-roofed hallway with a Japanese-style lounge. The lounge is separated from the hallway by bespoke frameless glass doors. The main feature of this room is two striking murals of koi fish, continuing the oriental theme.
The oriental flair continues outdoors with terraces and soothing features including a water feature. Sliding doors open onto a Japanese-style garden. The landscaped gardens have been designed with nature in mind, with green spaces that provide a home for local insects and encourage biodiversity.
As with all Baufritz homes, only natural materials were used in the construction of the house. Excellent insulation and the incorporation of emission-reducing technology make this one of the most sustainable self build homes available.
“The house is great for entertaining; we have friends here for coffee and they are still here in the evening,” say the homeowners.
