Oak Conservatory In East Sussex Case Study

This project was undertaken for the parents of our oak framer, Chris. Their property is a thatched roof Arts and Crafts property (though not historic). It is located in Sussex, close to the Ashdown Forest. Like many other such properties, the leaded light windows were small, and internal spaces were therefore rather dim. The kitchen only had one small window, facing west. Light levels were further curtailed by the large tree located outside, and the sloping garden was not visible when seated, which also reduced the amenity of the living space.

The Brief

The brief was to create an oak framed conservatory/ extension that would improve light levels in the kitchen. We also undertook to remodel the existing kitchen to create a space which the clients could use for cooking, dining and relaxing while they took advantage of the westerly views over the garden and valley beyond.

Design & Challenges

The design involved the removal of the entire back wall and the creation of the new oak conservatory. In order to support the upper floor of the property where the wall was removed, we installed two air-dried structural beams to ensure strength and structural integrity.

One of the key necessities was blending the new and old to seamlessly link the spaces with one another, and with the garden beyond. The clients remained in the property throughout the build, and we succeeded in keeping the kitchen and all services functional throughout.

Due to the steeply sloping ground, it was decided to build matching brick-faced walls up to the level of the damp proof course. A new suspended floor was installed for the new conservatory which matched that in the existing kitchen. Kitchen remodelling was undertaken which tied it into the new oak structure.

The Result

The finished result delivered the light-filled, beautiful space for the clients. Warm oak throughout, limestone tiles to give a seamless feel to the flooring, a reconfiguration of the kitchen area, and French doors to lead to a garden patio all helped to create a space with a truly relaxing and harmonious feel. This new, more open-plan living area allows a closer connection between the home and the garden, and not only increases the amenity of the home but also delivers a real ‘wow’ factor.

We built our first oak building back in 2004, for our own use. Our name, Loosehanger, comes from the location of that first build. It is believed to come from the old English term for ‘wooded bank’. Since then, we have enhanced many ‘wooded banks’ with our oak buildings and oak-framed extensions. Our beautiful, hand-crafted constructions truly care for and enhance their environments. Oak is a material that will allow new builds to blend in – in a way which few other materials allow.
