When updating his home, Nick Jones and his wife decided they not only wanted to feature something practical, but something that would also engage their young children.  They made the decision to install Thistle Magnetic Plaster from British Gypsum to meet that need.

The couple were considering home improvements when they started to discuss the possibility of replastering their kitchen and hallway.  When considering their options, rather than ordinary, run of the mill plaster, they selected magnetic plaster. With a young family in the house, Mr and Mrs Jones wanted something slightly more durable, hardwearing and interactive than regular plaster and which the whole family could benefit from.

The fact that Thistle Magnetic Plaster helps from a space saving point of view was a real selling point for the Jones family. Nick explains: “Magnetic plaster has helped in freeing up space as we can now attach things directly to the wall, such as photo frames, that previously would have taken up space on a shelf or in storage.”

The kitchen is often the hub for many families and Thistle Magnetic Plaster has helped the Jones family transform their kitchen into an interactive space that everyone can enjoy.  Not only can Nick and his wife display recipes, diet plans and live reminders, which can easily be added to, removed or updated, but the kids can also add their school work and pictures to the wall.

Nick continues: “Thistle Magnetic Plaster really comes into its own in a house with children.  When the kids get home from school they can simply add their work to the wall without having to worrying about Blu-Tack or marks damaging the wall when they move things around.

“Normally when you have a noticeboard you have to think about the height you place it at to ensure the children can reach it, but with magnetic plaster you don’t need to worry about that either.  The whole wall is effectively a ‘live’ notice board with magnetic plaster so the kids can hang their drawings anywhere they want and then move them around with ease.”

Aside from somewhere for the children to display their work, it is also an educational tool for them. Nick comments: “Magnetic plaster is a great way of entertaining the kids and helping them learn at the same time. By using magnetic letters and numbers we can teach them in a fun way.  We’re already thinking of other ways of educating the children.”

And it’s not just the children who are thrilled with Thistle Magnetic Plaster as Nick admits that adults love it too. Nick says: “We were so impatient when waiting for the plaster to dry – we couldn’t wait to use it and get creative as the options are endless!”

When it came to the installation, Nick and his family found this didn’t vary to that of regular plaster.  The only difference they noted was the colour of the plaster when wet but they did admit they actually quite liked the ‘slate’ like appearance of Thistle Magnetic Plaster.

Nick comments: “We’ve experimented a lot with the plaster and we understand that different items need more magnets than others, but we’re learning what works well.  In fact we have attached magnetic tape to our wall clock, which gives us much more flexibility.  It means it’s not fixed to one place and we can easily move it to make way for a new design idea.  The only problem is we never know where to look to tell the time!”

It’s not just the Jones family who has been impressed with Thistle Magnetic Plaster, as Nick admits that visitors to the house always comment on how inventive and engaging the plaster is.  He says: “It doesn’t matter who comes to the house – young or old, everyone loves the magnetic plaster.  To be honest it’s a real conversation topic!”

Nick believes that because the product is so unique his family will not only benefit from it but future families will too.  He thinks that if he was ever to sell the house then Thistle Magnetic Plaster would be a key feature.

Thistle Magnetic Plaster can be applied to new or existing walls, with a minimum 3mm thickness. Once dry, it can be painted with standard wall paint or combined with specialist paint finishes, including blackboard and whiteboard. You can even wallpaper over the top of it and magnets will still stick!
