A former Victorian girl’s school which was converted in the 1950s into a single storey home.

McLaren Excell dropped the floor level and removed the false ceiling which allowed  them to create a family home with dramatic double height space and additional rooms at first floor level.

The main living space is church-like in scale and arrangement, befitting of a pure and restrained selection of materials.

Birch plywood, concrete, wood, wool and brass were used throughout and a structural spine wall forms the stairwell to the bedrooms above.

McLaren Excell is an ambitious and energetic design-led architecture practice based in Chelsea, Central London. Co-directors by Luke McLaren and Robert Excell, working primarily on private residential and commercial projects.

McLaren Excell love what they do and invest great energy in delivering projects which are beautifully conceived and finely crafted. They concentrate on responding to their client’s needs by designing projects in a very intimate and hands-on way, collaborating with skilled people that we trust and ensuring that they deliver superb projects on time and to the agreed budget.

Established in 2010, the practice has taken on a diverse range of projects in a relatively short time and has built a reputation for producing buildings which have a calm authority and finely nuanced sense of place.

All projects undertaken by McClaren Excell begin with a clear observation of the existing condition of the building and a strategy is formed around the unlocked potential and hidden qualities of its existing features.

Their work is the result of a careful process of rigorous research into light, space, surface and material, the result of which will come to define the building as a whole.
