Bathroom design for smaller spaces often calls for creative thinking, so choosing fixtures that work hard without overwhelming the room is key. Compact, space-saving sinks don’t have to compromise on looks. With thoughtful materials, bold finishes, or unexpected shapes, even the smallest sink can become a standout feature.
So, if you’re looking to make the most of your space, these small bathroom ideas offer plenty of inspiration. From statement units to smart storage solutions, these bathroom sinks prove that good design can shine, no matter the size of your bathroom.
How big should a bathroom sink in a small bathroom be?
According to James Roberts, director of Sanctuary Bathrooms,"With bathroom sinks and basins, when it comes to space it is a matter of two size dimensions: width and outward depth. In reality, no basin is off-limits as long as it doesn’t affect the ability to move around a space and users are comfortable. In most cases, this will mean having a narrow width, short projection depth, or both."
James continues, "With smaller family bathrooms, you should be looking at around 600mm in width and approximately 450mm or less in depth, though some bathrooms can allow for a longer width where the depth is the only issue. This should allow for sufficient size to do all the essential beauty and hygiene routines without feeling too cramped. Wall hung, semi-pedestal, and pedestal basins should not be a problem in this instance, depending on the look and style preference. Some companies also offer corner basins, sinks that sit in the adjoining corners of rooms, which is also beneficial for those wanting to try and make use of as much of a room as possible.”
How big should a bathroom vanity be in a small bathroom?
“If you are wanting to combine your bathroom sink with a vanity unit, the aforementioned sizes are probably around the minimum to be comfortable for family bathrooms in terms of storage, though it may mean adjustments elsewhere in layout and sizes if wanting anything bigger,” explains James Roberts. “Vanity basins usually match the size of the unit, but obviously if opting for a countertop basin or vessel sink, these will have to fall into line with the size of the unit. Anything smaller may feel cramped, insufficient in terms of storage, so we would generally steer customers away from anything too narrow or small in size. However, such cloakroom vanity units and smaller sinks may be better suited for downstairs toilets, smaller bathroom spaces and en-suites where only needed for basic daily tasks such handwashing.”
James is one of three directors of Sanctuary Bathrooms, working alongside his father and brother. He joined the company in 2007 having previously studied to become a plumber

FAQs
How can you maximise storage space around the sink in a small bathroom?
"Fundamentally, in a smaller space, it is about using both the vertical height of a room as well as the floorspace," says James Roberts, director at Sanctuary Bathrooms. "In terms of vertical fixtures, a mirror cabinet may be a good solution for above a bathroom sink combining two or three features into one with a mirror, storage within, ambience lighting and charging features. This can be fitted directly to a wall or even recessed if needed, and may counterbalance smaller storage under a sink. An alternative solution may be a bathroom mirror that has open storage behind it – such as Sanctuary Bathoom's Origins Living Dockside Mirror with Open Shelving– which can hide away essentials and again combining two features in one."
James continues, "Newer features, like niches, tend to be used in shower areas, but can also be implemented across wider bathroom spaces to create extra shelving areas, or areas for decorative touches. Outside of that, then including as much shelving around a room is a must for storage, making use of bathing and showering areas with baskets too, can help free up space elsewhere."
How do I make a small bathroom sink more practical?
A simple way of making a small bathroom sink more practical is installing wall-mounted taps to free up valuable counter space. Similarly, opting for a sink with built-in storage, such as a slimline vanity with drawers or shelves, ensures you have a handy spot for essentials.
If your bathroom is especially tight on space, consider corner sinks or slimline designs, adding a towel bar beneath or next to the sink to help save space and keep things tidy. Finally, be mindful of the materials you choose. Easy-to-clean surfaces like ceramic or porcelain will make maintenance a breeze, but durable finishes like quartz or composite can add a touch of luxury while standing up to daily use.
