Cosy bedroom ideas that are perfect for lazy morning lie-ins
Cosy bedroom ideas are often the main goal when it comes to bedroom design. We've rounded up 12 ways to create a cocoon-like space for the perfect slumber
Just the words cosy bedroom ideas invoke a sense of calm and relaxation. It's the definition of a hug in interior design terms and a look that's often in high demand when it comes to bedroom design.
But other than layering textured soft furnishings, what else goes into creating cosy bedroom ideas? It may be more than you first think and covers everything from lighting, fabric and flooring to furniture.
Keen to cosy up? We've asked experts for their ideas and advice for creating the perfect bedroom cocoon and here's what they have to say.
Make sure you remember your windows in cosy bedroom ideas
“As well as offering practicality by helping to regulate room temperature and block out light, when done right, window dressings can help to create a cosy feeling and aesthetic through the use of texture and colour," says Helen O’Conner, product manager at 247 Blinds.
“Opting for energy saving thermal blinds, which include an additional layer of insulation, helps to create physical warmth by retaining heat - making them an economical choice in the cold winter months.
“To build on this, consider adding a second layer to your windows to create depth by introducing floor-length curtains," adds Helen. Curtains should always touch the floor to create a heightened sense of comfort and luxury, in addition to the added benefit of locking in warmth when needed.
“When choosing the colours for your window dressings, steer away from cool-toned greys, blues and greens as they can result in a glacial effect. Instead turn to cocooning colours that have red and yellow undertones like rust, chocolate, and mustard.”
Helen O’Conner is the Product Manager at the Yorkshire-based company 247 Blinds and 247 Curtains. Helen is a self-confessed ‘blind nerd’ who has been in the window dressing industry for over 10 years and states that her favourite design era is the Arts and Crafts movement.
1. Choose a fabric covered bed for the softest sleep
When it comes to cosy bedroom ideas, "there is no better design decision than 'heroing' your bed in a tactile fabric," says Patricia Gibbons, head of buying at Sofa.com.
"Soft and sumptuous, velvet lends itself perfectly offering a snug yet luxurious finish that works equally well paired with contemporary minimalist shapes or more traditional curved and button-back headboards.
"Jewel tones are also a great combination," suggests Patricia, "as the rich, bold colour helps to create a sense of warmth. For a touch of extra cosiness and comfort layer your bed with a textural throw or blanket in a complimentary tone.
"Your bedroom should be a cosy room designed for relaxation and winding down so avoid having too much furniture," she adds, "and make sure you have multifunctional pieces that work extra hard to keep the clutter at bay."
If you're considering this sumptuous bed for your bedroom ideas, it's the Sunday Divan Bed available in a range of fabrics and sizes at Sofa.com.

2. Use stripes and darker colours to elevate a cosy bedroom idea
"To create a cosy and tranquil bedroom, it’s important to carefully consider the colour palette of not just the walls, but the upholstery and accessories too," says Kirsty Barton, brand storytelling manager at Alternative Flooring.
"Look to incorporate comforting neutral hues such as soft grey and gentle green to inspire relaxation, allowing your preferred aesthetic to shine through in your choice of textures and patterns, without overwhelming the space.
"Subtle stripes are an excellent pattern choice," says Kirsty, "adding an element of understated elegance whilst drawing attention to key décor areas. A striped carpet or rug placed beside or under the bed elevates the overall scheme, while making your bedroom the perfect haven of comfort and style."

3. Use dark grey and wood for cosy grey bedrooms
Still in your grey era? There's a lot to be said for grey bedroom ideas which work either alone, or as the backdrop for pairing with other colours. It's still considered one of the best bedroom colours and despite its cooler nature, can still be a good choice for cosy bedroom ideas.
For lighter shades, layer up with lots of textured fabrics, rugs and carpets. For darker shades of grey, pair with dark wood flooring, paint your ceiling and add pops of sophistication with a metallic patterned wallpaper and brass wall lights.
It's the perfect solution for a cosy master bedroom idea that oozes with style and has a snuggle factor.
4. Pay extra attention to your lighting
“There are many factors at play when it comes to making a bedroom feel cosy," says Mara Rypacek Miller, founder of Industville. "But one of the most important is undoubtedly the bedroom lighting ideas.
"The placement, style and brightness can significantly impact how relaxing and inviting the space feels so it’s critical to factor this into your design choices. When it comes to the style of lights you choose, organic curves continue to be a popular trend this year.
"Choosing lighting with curved lines that mimic the natural forms found in nature will enhance a soothing and harmonious ambiance," explains Maya. "For small bedroom ideas, consider integrating wall lights installed on either side of the bed or suspending bedside lights from the ceiling as pendants. This will free up surfaces creating an uncluttered space and a feeling of calm."

5. Embrace a vintage scheme for a warm and welcoming bedroom
Think of cosy fabrics, textures and colours and they can often have a slightly aged patina or feel to them. Perhaps they're reminiscent of childhood or times spent in quaint holiday cottages on the coast.
Either way, soft shades of blue, dusky pink, cream and painted wood are all great ways of creating cosy bedroom ideas that will make you happy to stay in bed and snooze.

7. Divide a large room with a half height headboard wall
"In a larger bedroom, using a half-height headboard can be an effective way to create a broken-plan layout that feels cosier and more inviting," says Claire Garner, director of Claire Garner Interiors.
"When deciding your bedroom layout ideas, position the half-height headboard centrally to divide the room into distinct areas, such as a sleeping zone and dressing area. This approach provides a sense of separation without completely closing off the spaces, maintaining an open and airy ambiance," explains Claire.
"If you are fortunate enough to have a beautiful view, the half-height headboard ensures it remains unobstructed, allowing you to enjoy the scenery while still benefiting from a thoughtfully divided space.
"Enhance the functionality of the half-height headboard by incorporating built-in storage or shelves to keep the space organised and clutter-free, further contributing to a more relaxing and serene bedroom environment."
Claire Garner is an expert in crafting timeless interiors that radiate elegance and sophistication. With a keen eye for design, she excels in layering muted colours, patterns, and textures to build design schemes with depth and personality.
7. Make a modern bedroom cosy with maroon
Although modern bedroom ideas may seem far removed from cosy bedroom ideas, the two can reside in harmony when you get the colours and types of fabric right say the experts.
"The trick to creating a cosy bedroom is to use plenty of soft furnishings such as plush bedding and an array of pillows in various sizes and textures," says Debbie Leigh, design manager at Iliv.
"Add layers with a soft throw or blanket draped at the foot of the bed for extra warmth. Full length curtains will also add to the cosy feel and you may wish to consider using blackout designs for a serene, restful space.
"Fabrics like cotton, velvet and faux fur are excellent choices for creating a cosy bedroom, and when it comes to colours, choose a palette that exudes warmth and tranquillity," advises Debbie. "To bring warmth and comfort but with a sense of luxury, try deep, rich hues like burgundy, navy, and forest green."
Debbie is an expert in creating beautifully coordinated fabric collections that can be easily combined to create harmonious interior schemes, perfect for cosy bedrooms and more. With more than 30 years of experience, she takes every design from conception right through to the finished textile - inspired by the latest trends and techniques from every continent.
7. Or, add pops of jewel toned colours for a rich, cosy feel
“Neutral bedroom ideas are often associated with creating a warm, safe, and cocooning space but bright colours can also have the same effect," says Stephany Aubrey, brand specialist at Zinus.
"Pairing bold yellow and pinks with dark wood shades will create an overwhelming feeling of warmth. These highly saturated hues benefit from warm undertones to create a space that feels energising and zingy but still comfortable and cosy," explains Stephany.
"By using these bright accent shades in your bedroom decor ideas, you can also offset any stark white walls perfectly.”
8. Turn to timber for a cosy cabin-core feel
"Wood can significantly enhance the cosiness of a bedroom, transforming it into a warm and inviting sanctuary," says Ian Tomlinson, managaing director of Chaunceys Timber Flooring.
"While wood is commonly used for wood flooring ideas, its application on walls can create an even more relaxing atmosphere. Using wooden planks as wall cladding adds texture and depth, creating a rustic charm that feels both timeless and sophisticated.
"The natural grain and colour variations of timber bring a sense of organic beauty, making the space feel calm and cosy," says Ian.
"It's also an idea that is ideal for spaces used for guests," adds Caron Grant, brand manager at Bridgman, "as the warm and welcoming feel will help to put them at ease. In addition to adding warmth, wooden wall panelling will enhance texture and character in the bedroom. When paired with a soft throw, plush rug, and scatter cushions, it allows for ultimate comfort and relaxation.”
9. Use shaded lights for a cosier, ambient glow
“Creating a cosy bedroom with lighting is all about layering," says Jo Plant, head of design at Pooky. "Start by considering both task and ambient lighting to ensure your space is as functional as it is inviting. Incorporating multiple light sources, such as floor lamps and pendants, can create soft pools of light that enhance the room's warmth.
"When designing your lighting scheme, think about the mood you want to achieve. Whether it’s a warm and cosy retreat, a feminine sanctuary, or an opulent haven, your lighting choices should reflect and enhance that atmosphere," says Jo. "Shaded bulbs tend to create a softer, more diffuse light, perfect for creating a relaxing environment.
"If reading in bed is a priority, consider directional wall lights or desk lamps for focused illumination. Planning your lighting from the beginning ensures you can incorporate all the elements you need without compromise, making your bedroom a perfect blend of cosy comfort and style.”
Jo Plant is head of design and production for Pooky, which is based in England’s Cotswolds region.
10. Master the art of bedscaping for cosy bedroom ideas
In the same way that tablescaping has become an art, turning boring buffets into sumptuous feasts, bedscaping is key when it comes to creating perfect cosy bedroom ideas.
“In any bedroom, the bed is the main attraction. To create a cosy atmosphere think fluffy pillows, a sumptuously soft duvet and some beautiful sheets," says Suzi Samaddar, room styling expert at furn. "Layer up and craft your own luscious bedcape with throws and cushions.
“Create an intimate atmosphere with touch - whether you love a faux fur cushion or a waffle texture throw, boucle or lush velvet there are lots of beautiful textures to choose from and layering these creates a warm feel.
“Adding a touch of cosiness can also be done by adding a candle or two to add a gentle ambience," says Suzi."
11. Don't forget to add a sense of personality to your cosy bedroom
"Creating a cosy bedroom involves blending comfort and warmth with your own personal style," says Amy Holton, head of creative at I Love Wallpaper.
So if bold prints and pastels are your preferred choice, don't be afraid to use them in a way that makes the room clearly yours, but still offers up a healthy serving of cosiness.
"Adding soft pastels like blush pink or serene blue can create a gentle and inviting atmosphere," explains Amy, "perfect for enhancing the cosy appeal of your bedroom."
To soften the cooler tones of shades such as lilac or blue, add terracotta into the mix and, "incorporate texture through soft accessories such as area rugs, thick curtains, and natural elements like plants and wooden furniture to bring warmth," says Amy.
12. Fireplaces create an instant sense of warmth as do cosy seating spots
Uncovered a fireplace during a home renovation or considering adding one as part of your self-build project? Even when not lit, nothing says cosy more than a fireplace in the bedroom.
To complete your scheme? Add seating says Gisela Lancaster, head of buying at Sofology.
“When it comes to creating a bedroom scheme that feels warm and cosy, pieces should be chosen to complement each other, rather than clash. The addition of a single armchair can transform a drab corner of your room into a cosy nook that’s perfect for curling up," suggests Gisela.
"Think carefully about how your seating mixes with your other decor, considering style, colour and material, to ensure they create a cosseting and comforting feel when combined - touch and sensation are an important part of how we experience our environment"
With lighting one of the most important elements in cosy bedroom ideas, Maya Rypacek Miller offers up her final tips.
"When choosing your main source of light, opt for warmer hues (2700-3300 K) and a dimmer to control the level of light throughout the day and night. This can then be complemented with task lighting at key areas like the bedsides to dial up brightness for practical reasons like reading.
"Don't forget the impact of accent lighting," adds Maya. "LED strips behind headboards or even well-placed candles can add nuanced, soft glows that make a room feel truly intimate and cosy.
"Finally, consider smart lighting solutions for ultimate control and convenience. With a smart lighting system, you can easily adjust settings to match your personal comfort levels, ensuring your bedroom remains a cosy retreat no matter the time of day.”
