Bedroom ideas for a dreamy sleeping spot
Bedroom ideas need to create the perfect balance between style and slumber. If you're stuck counting sheep, here's some ideas for a restful repose
When it comes to bedroom ideas for the perfect bedroom design, there's isn't one solution that suits all. Instead, it's a case of combining a mix of ingredients in just the right measures to create a personalised recipe that's unique to you.
For those homeowners who are short on space, more thought will be given to storage. For others, if you need your guest room to double up as a work from home office, furniture choices may lead the way. Or, perhaps you've included enough space in your self-build for a sumptuous master bedroom idea.
Either way, having moved more times than I care to remember, I do know that it's usually something visual that sparks the germ of an idea. And while final bedroom ideas may not end up being exactly the same as the initial inspiration, even something simple like a wall colour or duvet cover is often enough to get the creative juices flowing.
Bedroom ideas aren't just about the layout
The tricky thing with bedroom ideas is that while bedroom layout ideas are usually defined by exact measurements, visually it still has to come down to personal taste.
Bedroom trends will come and go, much the same as any other room. And while some of you will consider certain colours more restful, lovers of bolder colours may in fact find themselves unable to relax in a room that doesn't feature the colours they adore.
So what's the purpose of this article? To spark the start of an idea, even if it's not a full solution. It's a curation of a variety of bedroom ideas partnered with some expert advice to inspire and guide you towards the bedroom of your dreams.
1. Create a bedroom retreat with a cabincore approach
Hands up who'd love a few night in this cosy bedroom idea? I know I certainly would.
Even though my interior design preferences tend not to include rustic schemes, there's something about the way this bedroom combines pale vintage style wood wall panelling, with white painted beams, simply designed chairs, a wooden floor and sumptuously soft velvet bed linens that speaks to me. It entices me in with a gentle whisper that says stay and rest a while in this bedroom retreat.
There's no doubt in my mind that if I was invited to stay, I'd have a bench, like this Anyday Anton Oak bench from John Lewis, piled high with books and magazines and you'd never see me again!
2. Pair stripes with denim for young adults
Children's bedroom ideas can sometimes feel like a tricky road to navigate once they're coming to the end of their teenage years. Even if they're heading off to university, or have secured their first full-time job, experts predict they're likely to be living at home for longer than ever before.
If you find yourself facing the predicament of needing bedroom ideas to suit this age group, we think we've found a solution. Create a simple feature wall with wall panelling ideas, stick with stripes for your bed linen - they're always in vogue, but add a touch of denim blue for a look that's as comforting as a favourite pair of jeans, but carries a whiff of grown-up style without being staid or stuffy.
Pop in alternative bedroom storage ideas in the form of chairs as bedside tables and ladders for shelves.
The only problem? You may find them living at home for longer than you thought.

This seersucker bedding range with a navy-blue stripe has a classic textured finish with a smooth cotton percale reverse.
3. Create visual interest by playing with heights
Instead of shying away from a high bedroom ceiling, draw even more attention to it with a decorative picture rail painted in a contrasting shade. Then, for even more impact, choose a low platform bed to really elevate your scheme.
When it comes to colour choices, we love this combination of green, yellow and navy blue. And although yellow is sometimes referenced as too bright a choice for bedrooms, Rachel Marshall, brand manager at Bensons for Beds shares a few tips to enjoy bursts of butter yellow in your bedroom without disrupting your sleep - in fact they're good tips for any colour that's on the brighter side of the colour wheel.
- Accent Pieces: Introduce butter yellow through accent pieces such as cushions, headboards, bedding boxes, accent chairs, or artwork. These touches of colour can add visual interest to your space without overwhelming it
- Natural Light: Harness the power of natural light to highlight the yellow elements in your bedroom. Positioning curtains or blinds to let in sunlight during the day can enhance the vibrancy of the colour without the need for artificial lighting at night
- Layered Textures: Experiment with different textures and materials in yellow tones to create depth and dimension in your bedroom decor. From cosy rugs to silky bedding, blankets and throws, layering textures adds visual intrigue while maintaining a soothing atmosphere
- Subtle Patterns: Opt for subtle patterns or prints featuring yellow accents to add personality to your bedroom without dominating the space. Think delicate florals, geometric designs, or abstract motifs for a touch of whimsy
For similar yellow paint shades, try Babouche 223 from Farrow & Ball, available at Designer Paints. For a similar green to use in green bedroom ideas, this Benjamin Moore Cushing Green, also from Designer Paints, is the perfect choice.

4. Who said red won't work in bedrooms?
While red may seem ideal for bedrooms, (after all it is often associated with romance), it is sometimes considered too disruptive if you're seeking sleep.
But, as colour expert, Anna Hill, the brand director and colour consultant for paint brand Fenwick & Tilbrook confirms, if you follow the basic principles, your colour choices can lead to a stunning end result.
"The colours we surround ourselves with can have a big impact on our mood and energy levels, so it's important to choose the right colours for your home," says Anna. "You need to carefully consider the overall effect you want to create, as well as the size of the room and the amount of natural light available.
"Red is a powerful colour that can be very energising. However, it's important to use it in moderation as too much red can be overwhelming. Red is a good choice for accent walls, small spaces and rooms that you want to feel more intimate.
"However, whatever colours you choose," adds Anna, "they should be a reflection of your own personal style and be colours that you love. This will allow you to create a home that really reflects you."

5. Fill alcoves with fitted wardrobes
If storage is top of your bedroom ideas agenda, fitted wardrobes may be the solution and are especially good for loft bedroom conversion ideas where angles and ceiling heights may make storage planning more tricky.
“A leading trend within our homes is the desire for more space," says Ady Heaton, head of design at Howdens, who have recently launched a new range of fitted wardrobes.
"Our homes are getting smaller while our expectations of them are ever increasing. Homeowners are looking for clever storage solutions to maximise the space they have available. Fitted wardrobes allow for floor to ceiling and wall to wall spaces to maximised and you can fully customise the internal storage options to get the exact storage you need, whether you need specialist storage for shoes or to fit in an abundance of clothes.
“It isn’t just down to your wardrobe either, " says Ady. "Choosing fitted drawers can offer the same results too, as it removes any dead space or between the units and either other furniture or walls.”
Alcoves are often the perfect starting point and whereas a freestanding item may not fit, the beauty of bespoke is that everything is made to fit snugly into the available space.
For even more impact, colour match your walls and wardrobes and the space will seem seamless.
Ady Heaton is Head of Design at Howdens. Responsible for designing all of Howdens award-winning kitchen and fitted bedroom collections means he has extensive knowledge on how well-designed storage can transform your bedroom.
6. Pick botanicals - for your wallpaper rather than from your garden
Biophilic interiors which bring elements from the natural world into the home has been one of the most popular trends in recent years. Bringing a sense of immediate wellbeing there's no better place for the trend than in bedrooms where relaxation is key. Choosing floral patterns is a great choice if you're considering bedroom wallpaper ideas, but, be sure to have the right wallpaper tools to hand if you're embarking on a spot of DIY.
"Wallpaper offers an easy yet effective way of embracing the trend," says Tim Dixon, managing director of Beautiful Walls. Whether you want to redecorate the whole room, a feature wall or even the ceiling, floral wallpapers allow homeowners to create a focal point, add depth and dimension and create a calming atmosphere that exudes relaxation."
Tim shares his top tips on how to get a botanical bedroom look:
- Consider the scale of the print: For smaller bedrooms, opt for smaller scale prints to avoid overwhelming the space. Larger rooms can handle bolder, more dramatic prints
- Consider colour: Botanical wallpapers come in a variety of colours, from soft greens and blues to vibrant pinks and yellows. Consider a palette that complements your existing décor and evokes the feeling you want to create
- Create a focal point: Use botanical wallpaper to create a statement wall behind your bed to draw the eye
- Accessorise thoughtfully: Complement your botanical wallpaper with natural textures like wood and woven baskets

7. Hang elegant floor to ceiling curtains for a luxurious bedroom idea
For an added sense of luxury in your bedroom, always install floor to ceiling curtains and where possible, use more than one layer.
Molly Freshwater, co-founder of the Secret Linen Store says, "curtains play a pivotal role in bedroom ambience, particularly during sun-drenched summers.
"However, traditional blackout drapes may overpower a smaller space. Instead, consider 100% linen curtains which strike the perfect balance between natural light and privacy. These breathable yet substantial textiles infuse rooms with an airy feel, further amplifying the perception of spaciousness."

8. Cosy up with a working fireplace
If you're looking for an instant cosy feel to your bedroom, nothing beats a working fire for warmth and atmosphere. If you've uncovered a fireplace during your renovations but don't want to install an open fire, a log-burner could be the ideal solution. Just be sure to find out, what size log burner do I need before purchasing one, to make sure it generates enough warmth for your bedroom.

9. Toile de jouy makes a great choice for a pretty bedroom sanctuary
If your teenage daughter is seeking a more vintage, whimsical feel to her bedroom, toile de jouy designs are a great solution. Delicate, timeless and easily paired with upcycled furniture it can also be a good option for guest bedroom ideas where you want to create a space that's both pretty and practical.
We love this Toile de Jouy paper from Wallpaper Direct, which also comes in a soft grey if you're looking for something more neutral than the traditional blue or pink.
10. Hang pendant bedside lights for a touch of hotel chic
"In crafting the perfect bedroom ambiance, bedroom lighting ideas play a pivotal role," says Scott Richler, founder and creative director of Gabriel Scott. "Whether your style leans towards bold and glamorous or refined and subtle.
"Often likened to the jewellery of an interior space, standout lighting fixtures serve as the pièce de résistance of any luxurious home.
Looking at trends in bedroom lighting, "we're finding a growing affinity for exquisite pendant lighting suspended above bedside tables," says Scott. "Particularly en vogue are vibrant, textured glass beads that seamlessly integrate with the overall design aesthetic. Additionally, sculptural chandeliers positioned above the bed are garnering increased interest.
"For maximum impact, consider materials and finishes that harmonise with the design theme," advises Scott. "Warm metal tones and the soft glow of blown glass are popular choices, while incorporating diverse textures, hues, and shapes in glass finishes adds a personal, bespoke touch to the space."
Scott’s design experience developed over many years working in architecture, fashion, bespoke furniture and jewellery. The experience Scott earned from the time he spent designing jewellery informs a lot of his work when designing lighting fixtures, and combines perfectly with his architectural understanding of what buildings need when it comes to lighting that is both practical and beautiful.
11. Have fun with a travel inspired guest room
“Taking inspiration from your travels to dress your bedroom is the perfect way to bring the holiday spirit a little closer to home," suggests Georgia Metcalfe, founder and creative director at French Bedroom.
"Consider the essence of your favourite destinations and incorporate these into your bedrooms," says Georgia. "A room dressed in dusky lavender tones, soft whites and natural textures, for example, combined with delicate French furniture will be reminiscent of Provence and will instantly feel calming and rejuvenating.
"Alternatively, jungle motifs, botanical prints, layered rugs and textural wall hangings will offer a perfect sense of escapism to make going to bed and going away feel one and the same."
Georgia was always interested in architecture and interiors, and this gave her a natural interest in history and the influence on design of different eras. After working in PR interior design, she spotted a gap in the market for feminine, French-style beds leading to the creation of her company, where she continues to immerse herself in the world of bedroom interiors.
12. Nuture sleep with a neutral toned nursery
If you're welcoming a new addition to your home and are searching for nursery bedroom decorating ideas, neutral tones are often a great place to start. Non-gender specific, calming and nurturing, it's still possible to add a sense of joy and fun, as this Raining Stars design from Wallsauce shows, but in tones that won't over-stimulate or excite your baby at bedtime.
Choose natural wooden tones for your bedroom flooring ideas, but soften with large rugs to make the space softer for them as they grow.
13. Monochrome never fails to make a mark
It's rare to find a room in your home where a monochrome colour palette doesn't work. It's timeless and sophisticated and works in modern bedroom ideas as well as it does for small bedroom ideas.
However, as pure black and white could seem a little sterile in a bedroom environment, follow the tricks employed in this example to soften the edges and make your bedroom more welcoming.
- Use shades of white from cream through to chalky white
- Add texture through soft furnishings
- Use natural wooden frames for a gallery wall of graphical images
- Add detail with sculputral shapes and accessories
- Use rugs to break up black floor tiles
- Include plants to bring the room to life
14. Max out with a riot of colours and styles
Prefer your days and nights to be filled with a riot of colour? Although some experts suggest certain colours can over-stimulate, if drenching your home in colour makes you happy, it's likely this will equally make you feel relaxed. If this is the case, then opt for maximalist bedroom ideas which combine all of your favourite shades into one happy place and go to down with your final bedroom decor ideas for bringing the look to life.
Stuck for a starting place? Pick one item such as this John Lewis & Matthew Williamson Tiger Palm Duvet Set as your main idea and build out from there. Choose a darker green velvet headboard, add in pink, red and orange tones for warmth and wake up to sunshine every day with yellow painted walls.
15. Prefer a more serene approach? Choose all-over white
Of course, the antithesis to a maximalist bedroom is an all-white space. Calm, serene and devoid of distraction, white bedrooms can also be the perfect antidote to busy lives.
"Immediately transporting you to the finest five-star hotel, crisp white bedding is a luxury that never goes out of style," says Joanna Ross, general manager of design at Sheridan.
“White is strong and modern. A fresh white on white room offers the perfect respite we crave at the day’s end. But where colour is absent, amped-up tactility steps in - comforting our senses though touch.
"We have seen furniture and ceramics take on a more “human” tone through their soft curves and textured finishes," explains Joanna, "so it is natural that our bedding layers follow suit. Classic ribs nestle with embroidery or quilted patterns and pleating… a nurturing trend that offers true individuality and longevity.”

Keen to know a bit more about colour and design techniqes? Kate Duckworth, trends and interior expert, at Swift Direct Blinds shares her advice on ‘colour drenching’ and how to incorporate the hot interior design trend into your home.
“Colour drenching is when you paint everything the same colour, including walls, skirting boards, doors, radiators, ceilings, and other furnishings," explains Kate.
"This trend can make small spaces look bigger as walls and ceilings blend into each other. It also works for any desired aesthetic. Light paint colours can create an airy interior, or alternatively, you can create a dark and dramatic scheme that can make areas such as your bedroom more inviting.
"Drenching your interior in colour can also trigger dopamine releases in your brain and evoke certain moods," adds Kate. "Happy and bright colours such as red and yellow can increase your mental activity and make you feel energised, while darker shades can bring your energy down if you’re feeling overstimulated, and light colours such as blues and greens can make you feel calm and tranquil.
"Colour drenching your home can make smaller rooms feel more spacious and tidier, as well as create a sense of harmony," says Kate. "By painting everything one colour, there is no contrast for your eyes to linger on, making a room feel more expansive.”
Kate is a trend and interior expert at Swift Direct Blinds. She's currently immersed in the refurbishment of her own home, so she knows firsthand the challenges of choosing the perfect window treatments.
