Updating your bathroom sink is one of the easiest ways to refresh your space. Whether you want to make a bold statement, maximise under-sink storage, or add a little vintage charm, the right choice can transform your bathroom design.
From colourful countertop basins to classic pedestal designs, there’s no shortage of stylish options on the market. But beyond aesthetics, it’s important to consider size, practicality, and the right materials to ensure your sink works for your space.
Below, we’ve rounded up 12 expert-approved bathroom sink ideas to help you choose a design that feels right for your home.
1. Make your basin the star of the show
"Choosing a standout basin is a great way to make a feature out of your bathroom sink - and it doesn’t have to be too out there if you don’t want it to be," says Ally Dowsing-Reynolds. "If you love colour and pattern then embrace that with a patterned or bright ceramic basin, or if you prefer natural, earthy textures choose a stone sink that speaks to your style. "
"Sculptural basins have increased in popularity, especially when made of natural materials like stone and terrazzo as they give the space a spa-like atmosphere," explains Shamila Iqbal. These tactile materials bring a sense of luxury to smaller bathrooms, by adding texture and depth without overwhelming the space.

The Mini Coralie Basin is a great choice for small bathrooms or cloakrooms where space is tight but style still counts. Its blue-and-white swirling pattern and unique crackle glaze are guaranteed to make it a standout feature of your space.
2. Give bathroom taps some thought
Your choice of bathroom tap can completely transform the look and feel of your sink, elevating even the most understated designs. Barrie Cutchie, design director at BC Designs, explains: "You can often make a cheaper sink look a lot more expensive by investing in premium brassware. So this is something to consider when looking to make your bathroom sink the standout feature."
Solid brass taps are highly durable and resist corrosion far better than lower-cost plated alternatives, though they may require extra care to prevent water spots or patina (unless you prefer a more lived-in look). Polished chrome is a timeless option that’s easy to maintain, while brushed brass and matt black offer a more design-led aesthetic.
Top Tip: Before choosing your taps, check whether your basin is compatible with deck-mounted styles – some may require wall-mounted or freestanding options instead.

Crafted from solid brass with a brushed brass PVD finish, these wall mounted taps are perfect pairing for countertop, wall-hung, or inset basins.
3. Vanity units give a traditional feel
"Vanity units with sinks are definitely a popular choice at the moment," says Nancy Emery from Drench. "They're a fantastic addition to any size bathroom as they allow you to inject a bit more personality into your space while adding extra bathroom storage, which is always handy."
For those looking to add a modern edge to a traditional space, pairing an oval countertop basin with a wall-mounted or deck-mounted mixer tap is a great choice. This combination brings a fresh, contemporary feel without compromising the timeless charm of a traditional bathroom.
Sally Bettison, design manager at Tissino, agrees that functionality is just as important as style: "Vanity units make use of the space under the sink that may otherwise be dead space. It can also ensure that pipework is hidden to provide a cleaner, sleeker finish to your bathroom."
If you’re looking for flexibility in your sink choice, Sally suggests opting for a vanity unit with a countertop: "This allows you to select a basin of your own choosing, adding colour and texture to the furniture while creating a truly bespoke look."

4. Go wall-mounted for small cloakrooms
In a small bathroom, where every inch counts, it’s important to choose the right basin to make the space feel less cluttered or cramped.
"If you are fitting a basin in a cloakroom or a small downstairs toilet then you’ll probably want something small and compact, and there are specially designed 'micro' basins with these dimensions in mind," explains Nancy Emery from Drench.
A wall-hung vanity unit can also be a smart solution. "Wall-hung vanity units are perfect for small family bathrooms as they save floor space, help to minimise clutter, and can include an inset basin which is easy for all the family to use," Nancy adds. The open space underneath can also be used to tuck away a step stool, making it practical for little ones.
5. Or a space-saving combination unit
"If you're looking to create extra space in a small en suite bathroom, then a really great idea is a combination vanity unit," explains Nancy Emery from Drench. "These units combine a toilet, basin and storage into one neat and compact package. This should help your en suite feel more spacious but could also allow you to install a larger storage unit or shower as well."
This 1100mm L-shaped unit combines a reversible basin vanity and toilet with soft-close features.
6. Try a vintage feel with a reclaimed sink
Vintage bathrooms are enjoying a revival, with reclaimed furniture adding warmth and character to modern interiors.
"We’re seeing the emerging trend of ‘Storybook Kitchens’, and bathrooms are heading in the same direction," says Ally Dowsing-Reynolds, co-founder of Dowsing & Reynolds. "Charming, nostalgic touches are starting to appear again, with countertop basin sinks standing on vintage wood vanity units and traditional pillar taps."
This approach works especially well in Victorian bathrooms, where period design details shine. Repurposing a piece like a reclaimed chest of drawers as a vanity unit can introduce a sense of history and craftsmanship to these spaces. Paired with a crisp white basin and brass taps – as seen in this beautiful bathroom by BC Designs – can create a look that feels both timeless and full of personality.
As co-founder of Dowsing & Reynolds, Ally has over 20 years of experience in design and interiors. She has helped shape trends in luxury bathroom fittings, and has designed a range of statement bathroom taps and accessories.
7. Add a double basin for 'his and her' luxury
A double basin setup is a luxurious addition for couples. Not only does it provide plenty of personal space for busy morning routines, but it also brings symmetry and balance to your bathroom design.
To make the most of this setup, ensure there’s enough spacing between the basins to allow comfortable use for two people. Wall-mounted taps help free up counter space, while a double vanity with built-in storage keeps toiletries within easy reach.
8. Brighten a bathroom with bold colours
"Dopamine dressing has been trending in both fashion and interiors for a while, and it’s going to continue on into 2025 as we look to add more joy to our homes," says Ally Dowsing-Reynolds.
A colourful basin is a simple way to incorporate this bathroom trend. "We’re likely to see a lot more colourful bathroom sinks in 2025 as homeowners become more playful and unique with their bathroom design," adds Nancy Emery from Drench. "Think vibrant reds, blues, greens, pinks, and even black."
For those hesitant to fully commit to a colour-drenched bathroom, starting small is a great approach. "You can extend this to your sink design by opting for a colourful basin, or if that feels a bit too bold, stick with a white basin but introduce a colourful tap and matching waste," Ally Dowsing-Reynolds suggests. Guest bathrooms or cloakrooms are ideal for experimenting with bold colours before taking the plunge in larger spaces.
9. Get nostalgic with a retro colour scheme
Retro-inspired bathroom colours are also making a comeback in the world of bathroom design. "Think 70s-style avocado or peachy-coloured baths with matching sinks and toilets," says Ally Dowsing-Reynolds. "It might sound like it should be left in the past, but with some careful consideration, these matching suites can add loads of personality and character to your bathroom."
Opting for a coordinated suite in pastel shades or vibrant retro hues, like the powder blue seen here in this bespoke bathroom by Burlington, can create instant impact. To balance the boldness, consider pairing it with patterned bathroom wallpaper or neutral tiles to keep the look cohesive.
10. Make a splash with a statement basin
A tiled vanity unit is a creative way to bring personality into your bathroom. Whether you opt for an intricate mosaic, geometric patterns or handcrafted zellige tiles, these design details add colour and a sense of craftsmanship to any space.
"Contrasting a white basin against a richly coloured vanity or bold tile backdrop can create a striking look," says Shamila Iqbal from Bathroom Mountain. A statement basin in a complementary or contrasting finish will elevate this look further, making your sink a true focal point.
For a more cohesive feel, consider tying in the colours of your tiles with smaller details like taps or handles. "Finally, remember that accessories such as decorative soap dispensers are also an easy and inexpensive way to add character to your bathroom sink," Shamila adds.
11. Don't overlook a classic pedestal sink
"A classic pedestal basin conceals pipework while maintaining a simple, timeless aesthetic," explains Shamila Iqbal from Bathroom Mountain. These iconic bathroom sinks are therefore a brilliant option for homeowners who value simplicity.
Pedestal sinks are also smart choice for compact spaces or en suite bathrooms, where saving floor space is a priority. Plus, their open design makes cleaning around and underneath them a breeze.
While pedestal sinks don’t offer the same built-in storage as a vanity unit, this can be seen as an advantage in spaces where a minimalist aesthetic is the goal. To make up for the lack of internal storage, consider pairing your pedestal sink with wall-mounted bathroom accessories or shelving.
12. Good lighting can transform a sink
The right bathroom lighting can completely transform the look and feel of your bathroom sink area, elevating it from functional to fabulous.
"A good way to create a statement basin in a modern bathroom is to install LED mirrors or wall lights that elevate the basin zone," suggests Jorge Hernandez, head of design at Burlington Bathrooms. Strategically placed lighting will draw attention to the sink and provide glare-free illumination for everyday activities.
Alternatively, for an industrial edge, Ally Dowsing-Reynolds suggests using outdoor bulkhead lights in the bathroom to create ‘an effortlessly industrial look’.
FAQs
What different mounting styles are there for bathroom sinks?
The way your bathroom sink has been mounted will affect the way it looks and how practical it is to use. Ally Dowsing-Reynolds, co-founder of Dowsing & Reynolds, explains how different styles suit different spaces, depending on your bathroom’s size and design:
Countertop sinks With countertop sinks, you have the freedom to tailor your sink, tap, and vanity style separately. This can give you more options when it comes to making your sink a stand-out feature. The downside to these types of sinks is that you’ll need to make sure the surface of your vanity can withstand splashes from the sink – so if you’re using reclaimed wood, you’ll need to find the correct sealer to protect the surface.
Wall-mounted sinks Wall-mounted basins have a more modern look to them and can be particularly great in smaller bathrooms, where you want to create more floor space. You can customise the height to your preference, but you’ll just need to consider the weight of the sink. Wall-mounted sinks can be trickier to install so can often end up costing more, but overall they’re a great space-saving solution.
Pedestal sinks Pedestal sinks are a classic, timeless option and are easier to install than wall-mounted sinks. They usually come in a standard height so you’ll have less flexibility there, but they do save more space than a floor-mounted bathroom vanity, making them ideal for smaller spaces - particularly if you don’t want the hassle of installing a wall-mounted feature.
