Comparing insulation materials for your self build, renovation or home improvement? If you haven’t yet considered spray foam insulation then you could be overlooking the ideal technology for your project.
Spray foam insulation is a mix of liquid components that expand into a foam when sprayed into position, where it sets into an insulating layer.
The benefits of using spray foam insulation are vast, but there are some important aspects to consider before installation. Firstly, you will need a trusted contractor who has undergone extensive training in applying spray foam insulation. Secondly, it’s important to understand the differences between the two main types of spray foam insulation: open-cell and closed-cell.
Open-cell is flexible and airtight, and allows moisture to pass directly through the foam without trapping it, meaning leaks can be quickly identified and repaired. Closed-cell is more like conventional rigid foam insulation boards, and while it doesn’t allow air or moisture to pass through it, it can offer structural stability.
Here are four reasons why spray foam insulation could be right for your home.
1. It can lower your energy bills
Spray foam insulation helps to prevent warm air escaping from a home during the winter, and prevents cool air escaping during the summer. This therefore reduces the amount of energy required to heat and cool your home.
A 2018 study found that spray foam insulation led to energy savings of up to 56% for the owners of a farmhouse in Scotland.
2. It can make your home cosier
Spray foam insulation creates an insulating airtight barrier which can prevent draughts in your home. By eliminating draughts your home will be more thermally efficient and therefore much more comfortable to live in all-year round. Spray foam also reduces outdoor noise, dust and allergens for ideal indoor conditions.
Air sealing your home with spray foam insulation eliminates unwanted cold drafts and high heating bills in winter and stuffy, humid rooms in summer. Plus, you will notice more even temperatures resulting in greater comfort and a reduction in energy consumption.
3. It is quick to install
Installing spray foam insulation is generally a very quick process and can be much faster than the time it takes, for example, to cut individual PIR boards, fit them in place, fill gaps with expanding foam and then tape with foil insulation tape. This can also reduce labour costs when compared to more traditional insulating methods.
4. It reaches hard-to-insulate areas
The flexible structure of spray foam insulation is brilliant for coverage because once sprayed, it expands and covers hard-to-reach areas of the house. This means that it will prevent heat loss and air leaking into your home.
